Located at 3751 Motor Ave in Los Angeles, the theater was showing the MGM silent feature Love starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. The two stars actually did fall in love in real life… but Greta later got cold feet, and left Gilbert at the altar.

It’s fascinating that these are dated 1916 - I’d have said much earlier. There’s an example of the one of the left, Sorbet, in the Met’s collection where it’s dated to 1912.
