so whats the verdict on Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries?
Hallo Anon! I apologise for the delay - I have trouble answering these at work. I was overall pleased with the adaptation, given how much I love the books. The costuming wasn’t too bad (given some of the atrocities that pass for 1920s costuming in period dramas) - not perfect, but there was the odd piece that stood out in a positive way. I was a bit disappointed at how much the book had to be condensed to fit into the 1 hour format, although a lot was understandable from a narrative perspective (changing Phryne’s introduction to Dot by having the latter working in Lydia’s household). I thought Lydia could have been more developed…I saw her more like Jean Harlow’s character in “Dinner at Eight” than a non-descript mouse.
I was quite tickled by the sexing up! Dr Mac - rrrRRRrrrrow! I thought she was Bungy at first - a rather glammed up Bungy. And I never imagined Jack Robinson as the fanciable type - he’s supposed to have a forgettable face, but this Jack Robinson was pretty delectable.
Nice sets, too - and while the mat screenwork was fairly obvious, it did give a good background to those scenes that aren’t easy recreated today (e.g. the Melbourne docks).
